Mercury Retrograde Explained: How to Find Lost Things (Known and Unknown)

Astrology Guide to Mercury Retrograde Meaning, Effects, and Healing.

Written while listening to Jessy Greene’s “Collide” (If you don’t know this amazing Pisces musician, you should. Rock violinist? Yes please!)

Music that comes up is always meaningful at these times. Notice what is coming up for you, how you are feeling, and so what you are being given a chance to deal with, change and/or move through.

What Is Mercury Retrograde? Meaning, Effects, and What You Can Gain

What Mercury Retrogrades Do and What You Can Get From It

Mercury retrogrades are powerful times for us to see where the glitches and straight-up messes are in our lives. It’s a time when we can find lost things, both items and within ourselves, so we can adjust our course to make our lives more fulfilling and improve the world.

It is all about our communication and business (Mercury), and it’s showing us both where we are good and where we may have lost things along the way.

It’s a time to consciously ask for help, answers, and solutions.
It’s a time to actively look for what we need. We can find the people, information, and resources we need, especially in the sign and house (if you know that) in your chart.

They happen several times a year and can collide with also eclipse season and Venus retrogrades, which I wrote about here.

Mercury Retrograde Meaning: Finding Lost Things (Physical and Emotional)

Mercury Retrograde Is a Time to Find Lost Things

Maybe some things you didn’t even know you lost? Like your heart and humanity? Like your relationships and faith? And yes, that old ring or notebook you really needed for that important thing.

Mercury retrograde, like a lot of the co-opted spirituality and information in this world, not only has a bad rap but is very misunderstood. That combo of ignorance is what the world needs less of. Let me do some work on that here. Lol, because yes, it all matters, and as a Sag stellium, it is what I’m all about.

As the basics of astrology go, Mercury is a fast-moving planet that rules Virgo and Gemini. Those are two very fast, very smart signs because, yes, Mercury is a very clever planet.

Life’s too fast to feel.” – Collide

Listen. When I say the cosmos is not only always speaking but does so serendipitously, this is what I mean. Music on random as I write, and this song comes on, and the lyrics—this Pisces angel—line up. The universe is always talking to us. The conversation you overhear walking on the street. The art that makes you stop as you scroll or walk by. The thought that pops into your head. What are you tuned into?

Music is also linked to Pisces, perfect for the super Pisces moment I write this in.

Mercury Retrograde in Water Signs: Emotions, Intuition, and Relationships

How Mercury Retrograde Affects Water Signs

In general, water signs clue us into our feelings and our care for others. Our relationships are the main topic—and yes, that includes the one with ourselves. It also highlights our intuition, that inner knowing that can’t be explained.

OK, so now my random music is playing “Southern Cross,” CSN. This you can download lol, and for me, this song is a CLASSIC Mercury retro moment linked to emotion as it reminds me of college (amazing) and my old boyfriend.

“Spirits are using me, a larger voice is calling. Whatever brought you and me cannot be forgotten.”

Look at that timing.

So yes, water signs—those are coming up for all of us when Mercury retrograde is in those signs. Of course, where it comes up for us—meaning what house—maybe your work (10th house), your family (4th house), or your personal identity (1st house).

“Who knows love can endure. And you know it will.” – Crosby, Stills, Nash, Southern Cross

To be clear, since Mercury retrograde is about reviewing, things coming back from the past, old issues coming up again, this means that a lot of our emotional baggage—from this lifetime and before—comes up for review, recognition, and to be dealt with.

Do you need to get over a painful separation from a person you love? A dream that didn’t come true that you pretend you don’t want but do? An addiction that takes the place of living in this world fully? Someone you wronged that you can make right?

These signs are clues to our inner world and thus require feeling our feelings and connecting to memories. They also require healing at times and processing. Get help—whether it’s a therapist, yoga, changing your diet—processing emotional pain will require others. Choose yours well. (And yes, it will likely bring in new people, hurrah. That’s progress.)

John Mayer, “83”: “I have these dreams of walking home, where it used to be.”

Laura Branigan, “Gloria“: “But you really don’t remember all the things they said, the voices in your head, calling Gloria.”

Mercury retrograde is the time to find lost things. What does this mean in this part of your life? And remember to be extra sensitive to others at this time. They are all going through this and feeling it, even if they don’t want to admit it. Emotions will be high. Use care.

OK, and now Tracy Chapman came on, “Baby Can I Hold You.” Clearly the gods are with me on this piece, because when Tracy comes up, you are in the light’s hand.

“Sorry is all that you can say.”

Moving on…

Mercury Retrograde in Air Signs: Thoughts, Communication, and Fast Changes

How Mercury Retrograde Affects Air Signs

None of this is a joke, and now Whitney Houston—legend!—starts our air sign review. Perfect.

Yes, it’s “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Which, with Pluto in Aquarius—and America having its return year—is more chef’s kiss.

Air signs are all about motion and speed, so with Mercury about speed, this means things are usually flying fast all around us, and we are struggling to finish a thought before five more come in.

Take It or Leave It,” The Strokes, just came up. That title is so perfect with air sign times.

However, what I’m focused on with Mercury retrograde in air signs is being mindful of the thoughts and things that come to you, because you are choosing—even if you think you aren’t.

(Thank God some Brahms came on so I can focus on this section and do this dang thing!)

Mercury retrograde has us finding lost things, and in the case of air signs, we really can make great strides in our thoughts and ideas, as information and resources will be flying in these 3+ weeks.

Conversations will have aha moments that can lead you to a new job, new friend, new relationship, new course of study, and new ways of doing things. You can pick up a book and find some info you didn’t know you needed. You can also quickly alter your direction for the better in some area of your life.

Fast pivots are possible, so don’t be afraid to follow what comes up, because that is the whole point—to find lost things, known and unknown, that lead you to better.

The key in these times is to be mindful—do breath and body work so your busy mind is not leaving behind your heart and body. Presence, even in fast times, is required to best connect to the highest light coming for you.

(Omg just checked the song, and it’s Leonard Bernstein, and the crescendo is wow.)

See, even my focus writing this section is more cerebral lol. The power of the mind.

And that is the key in this Mercury retrograde: your mind. What are you feeding it? What are you watching, listening to, being exposed to? It’s a great time to elevate and make changes you’ve been wanting to. It can happen in the blink of an eye.

Mercury Retrograde in Fire Signs: Passion, Conflict, and Slowing Down

How Mercury Retrograde Affects Fire Signs

Here’s the thing: Mercury retrograde means that things come up from the past, and it also is a time of mishaps, miscommunications, and things going backwards and forwards in a messy way.

As fire signs are, well, the fiery parts of ourselves, this can be extra explosive. I wrote about mercury retrograde in Leo here, useful for prominent Leo placements as well.

In a way, fire signs—linked with passion, energy, progress, and movement—hold space for us to see where we are running headfirst into a dead end, or going off half-cocked, so we can correct course and do it well.

As fire signs are all about energy, action, and going forward, this is awesome—but in Mercury retrograde, we are going to want to intentionally slow our roll, which can be hard.

You will have the desire and ideas, but it will not go as fast as your passion wants, and that can lead to anger, frustration, and yes, more explosions.

Because it’s a fast time due to fire’s nature, it’s extra important to practice mindfulness with ourselves and others before our energy gets us into further hazards.

Mercury retrograde in fire signs is asking us—as it’s all about communication—to slow our roll in how we are with others and ourselves. We love speed and passion, but we also have to take into account other people and where they are at.

It’s a reminder to proceed with caution, because others are speeding too, and we want to align to better flow with others and ourselves to have successful ventures and relationships. Mercury does rule commerce, aka trade, as well.

So yes, mind your business.

Watch Me Now,” The Transplants, just came on lol.

Remember, fire gets attention. Be aware of what you are getting it for and adjust as you are being shown. (Before this series of retrogrades, in 2025 we had them in fire signs for a year. We see how that went.)

So ask yourself during these times:

  • Where is your passion?
  • What are you fired up about?
  • What are you initiating?
  • What stimulates you and gets you excited each day?
  • What are you passionate about?
  • Are you living this?

Mercury Retrograde Do’s and Don’ts: What to Avoid and What to Do

You get what you give.” – New Radicals

Mercury retrogrades are not the time to buy technology, sign new contracts, or start something new (if you can avoid it, because life).

Things you try to push through at this time will have delays, reroutes, and hit snafus—but that’s because something can be improved, and changes and more information are needed.

When these snags hit, check yourself. Are you pushing because of some lack? Some idea that you won’t survive without it, that you know better? Because no—that’s a clue your humility needs a review, as do your priorities.

It’s a profound time to check yourself before, yes, as the Beastie Boys say, you wreck yourself lol.

Use the speed and whirl to reorient yourself, to find what you need on your journey of life.

Trust that it will be better than you could’ve imagined. The cosmos is good like that.

Bisousssss 💋

“I feel the music in you.”
“Don’t give up.”
“Don’t let go.”
“The world is gonna pull through.”
