From Floods to Foundations: Lessons from Neptune and Saturn in Pisces on Water and Boundaries

As Neptune and Saturn dance together in Pisces, we find ourselves submerged in a tidal wave of lessons about boundaries and the delicate balance of water—both in our environment and within ourselves. The depth we can reach is wonderful, as is the healing.

As this energy is around for over another year, let’s get comfortable in the deep, mysterious, healing waters around us all.

For years, astrologers have urged us to pay attention to our water. Now, with both Neptune and Saturn in Pisces—and both retrograde—the floods, both literal and symbolic, are upon us. Let’s explore how we can transform our relationship with this vital element into a safe space for growth and healing.

The Basics: Understanding Neptune and Saturn in Pisces

Neptune entered Pisces in 2011 and will remain until 2026. The last time it was in this sign was in 1862. Saturn entered Pisces in March 2023 and will leave in February 2026, having last traversed this sign between 1993 and 1996.

Pisces is a water sign connected to dreams, spirituality, intuition, and duality. It embodies caring, sensitivity, and emotional depth but is also prone to avoidance, addiction, and escapism. Neptune governs our dreams, spirituality, creativity, and intuition—our emotional waters. It also rules fantasy, illusion, and delusion.

Notice something? It’s a lot of the same. We are in a time of a lot of emotion, feeling and sensitivity.

In modern astrology, Neptune rules Pisces, while traditional astrology attributes its rulership to Jupiter. As Jupiter expands whatever it is in, it’s a similar vibe to Neptune mirroring the traits. You get more of what you are with Jupiter.

The Flood of Emotions: A Call for Balance

Notice the repetition and overlap; it’s a lot of water. Too much water can lead to floods, just as too much emotion can feel smothering. We are receiving a lesson on balancing this essential element in our lives at this time, and frankly, we aren’t doing well. Pisces as the last sign of the zodiac embodies all the signs before it. At its best is empathic, loving, selfless, kind, giving, creative, wise. We are being urged to get on that level.

Saturn, the planet of boundaries, serves as an opposite to the water energy of Pisces. It lives for a boundary. It wants to know the end point. It embodies facts, rules, and structure, enforcing limits. It does this because that allows structure to build. You want a form to take shape it is defined by its boundaries. In this context, we have an overwhelming amount of water alongside a rule enforcer. The past years of Neptune are hitting walls. Levees either hold or break, depending on their structural integrity, and Saturn highlights where we need to do some work. Boundaries that are too rigid don’t let in the good.

We are being asked to look at what we are doing with our emotional world and our physical world. They are mirrors, after all.

Water: Symbolism and Reality

Water, according to the Kabbalists, symbolizes mercy. Too much water, and you perish, just as surely as you would without enough. It’s a staple of our lives.

In 2015, Cape Town, South Africa, nearly became the first city to run out of water—ironic for a coastal city. Shortages have also occurred in Chennai, India (on the coast), São Paulo, Brazil (30 miles inland), and Basra, Iraq (70 miles from the Persian Gulf). So close, and yet so far.

These lessons are literal: you can be surrounded by something and still lack it. Just as someone could drown in inches of water, the spiritual lessons surrounding water are profound—especially given the current Neptune and Pisces energy.

Sadly, we appear not to have learned. We remain out of balance with nature. Inside and out. It’s time to listen and change.

“He who controls the water supply controls the people.”– Lao Tzu

Recent Crises: A Wake-Up Call

The water crisis in Flint, Michigan, began in April 2014 (notable as that’s Taurus season, linked to security and sustenance). This era focuses on our relationship with water. We know our relationship with our needed resource of water is not good, but will we act en masse to make necessary changes?

Just look up ocean oil spills. And toxins and garbage in our waters. The irresponsibility. Saturn would never. It’s time to do some good rule making.

Recent flooding in North CarolinaFloridaChina, and Poland this year has led to national emergencies. The ice caps are melting at alarming rates, causing rising water levels.

Last year, we witnessed catastrophic floods in LibyaGreeceTaiwan, and across America. The frequency of these events is increasing.

The Need for Balance: A Call to Action

Water must be in balance. We need the ice, and we need the waters to flow. Water signs in astrology correlate with our emotions and feelings. Currently, we are out of balance. We deserve flow.

We have pressing issues we cannot ignore, and yet… Saturn is crucial. We must utilize the positive traits of it alongside Pisces and Neptune to find equilibrium. Saturn is here to help.

Observing these floods, hurricanes, and storms makes it clear that change is imperative. The last time Neptune was in Pisces (1847-1862), America faced not only the Civil War to end slavery of people (!) but also the continued systemic genocide of Indigenous peoples.

How are we treating each other? Not well. How are we treating our waters? Not well. Both issues lie in our hands. All we need to do is change. How about it?

We have assistance, and it comes from Saturn (can’t believe I’m writing that, lol). Saturn in Pisces allows us to recognize the benefits of change and structure in our lives, enabling us to establish boundaries and limits—setting standards that benefit everyone. Just as children need boundaries to develop, adults do too, to survive. Neptune and Pisces allow us to do this with mercy for ourselves and others. We can dream up the better world we want and envision it as we build it.

Otherwise, we face floods—not just in our physical world but also in our inner world. Many are drowning inside, feeling alone and uncared for, turning to drugs for escape. There is another way.

Embrace the Change

In this time of profound cosmic lessons, let’s commit to creating balance in our lives and our waters. By honoring boundaries and embracing change, we can foster a healthier relationship with ourselves, each other, and the planet. Together, we can navigate these turbulent waters and emerge stronger.

It’s time for us to rise, reshape our relationship with water, and foster the change needed to heal both our planet and ourselves.
