Uncover Hidden Gems and Enrich Your Travels
Mirror, mirror on the wall, what is the fairest bookstore of them all? (Also yeah, all shopping locations are not the same lol.)
While there may not be a definitive answer lol, France certainly ranks among the top countries with the most sumptuous, inviting, and beautiful bookstores. ( I wonder what the astrology sign of bookstores would be lo.)
I’ve included bookshops on my must-visit lists when traveling to cities like Mexico City and Porto—truly some of the most amazing spaces ever! These visits transformed my trips. But it’s the bookstores I’ve discovered while flâneur-ing (wandering) that have changed my life. I’ve found incredible stories that helped sate my emotions, and I’ve met people who enriched my life. So when you travel, whether you’re a reader or just someone who enjoys art and culture, make sure to seek out local bookshops and give them a visit.
Paris Gems
There’s the overpacked, stuffed-to-the-brim maze that is the Abbey Bookshop. It holds so many gems, and with its warm staff, you’ll enjoy perusing this treasure trove of used books. Then there’s the charming and inviting Red Wheelbarrow Bookshop, where owner Penelope Fletcher curates an incredible selection of books for both adults and kids! The view here allows you to enjoy the books and the essence of Paris. (I call her the “book wizard”; every time I ask her for a recommendation, it turns out to be just what my soul needed.)
While there are many more bookstores in French, the English-language ones are incredible. But don’t overlook the French ones—they hold their own magic. Gibert Joseph is a French staple with a vast selection across many floors, including both used and new books, and plenty in English. If it’s an art book or something visual, who cares if it’s in French? It just adds to the charm. Don’t limit yourself! The location at Saint Michel metro always has bins outside (covered when rainy) filled with delightful books for just a dollar or two. Yes, that happens here!
There is also and old and used book market on the weekends at Parc Georges-Brassens in the 15th arrondissement. One of my favorite local tips. French charm and books galore. It’s got that gorgeous old iron structure thing going on. It’s a lovely spot!
Lille Has My Bookshop/Flea Market Heart
During a trip to Lille, I stumbled upon a busy building entrance, and the courtyard inside took my breath away. It was overtaken by a book sale, and I had to pause, wonder, and smile. I must have looked like a crazy person, but the gorgeous building filled with aisles of books had me feeling like I was experiencing a cultural heart emoji moment.
Being in a place that reveres books and architecture is what makes France a wonder for me. The books and spaces are inspiring and dreamy. Seeing a book sale as packed as a major retail store made it even more incredible—a culture that honors books is a good time.
The nexus of books and beauty, learning and culture, is something I deeply appreciate about French society.
Sure, I visit bookstores when I travel and always pick something up. (Of course, Boston is the best, but San Francisco, New Orleans, and San Diego have some gems! In fact, one of my top five bookshops is in San Diego!)
People often ask me what to do in Paris. The answer depends on the person, but a solid option for everyone is to find a bookstore and step inside. You’ll discover a world of wonder among the books, along with staff and patrons who can share tips about the city, favorite restaurants, and hidden cultural gems that likely won’t be featured in your travel magazine.
Bookstores are as varied as the stories they hold, but in Paris, they embody creativity. The beauty is evident, and it adds to the overall enjoyment.
While not technically a bookstore, a library is an amazing resource for books. Stepping into the Bibliothèque Mazarine or the BNF Richelieu in Paris will leave you staring at the walls and ceilings, making it hard to concentrate. (How can you focus with so much beauty around, right?)
So, on your next adventure, make bookstores a priority; they hold the magic to enrich your journey and connect you with the heart of the places you visit.
And don’t forget to tag me when you find good ones! Sharing is caring, and we need to compile our lists. 😊
