As the holiday season approaches, we transition from the expansive and festive vibe of Sagittarius season to the more grounded and pragmatic energy of Capricorn. It goes from can’t-stop-wont-stop best-party-ever yes Ill have the champagne and the trip to Paris to the bills are due and your deadline is here and the vacation is over and no you can’t have that pieces of cake just started a new workout plan. While this shift can feel challenging (understatement ooof), it offers us a unique opportunity to blend indulgence and practicality. Yeah I know, I’m very Sag so those two words are like oil and water, BUT, apparently I have grown enough to see that when employed with balance you can actually then have a life of parties without the oh-crap-now-I-have-to-pay-for-it hangover. It’s called a win-win.
If you’re celebrating the holiday season in France, you’re in for an extra treat as you experience the beauty and joy of both zodiac influences in a dreamy place. Considering both are about indulgence and excess (Capricorn featuring the bag to pay for it ahead of time, and Sag the ability to know it will get paid for) France is an amazing place to end and begin the year.
Unmissable Experiences in France During the Holidays
I always get asked what to do in France, especially during the festive season, and there are several particularly special experiences that should not be missed. With its rich tapestry of regional traditions, France offers a multitude of unique celebrations. Whether you’re skiing in the Alps or enjoying a cozy holiday in a Pyrenean village, here are some general holiday highlights to make the most of your trip:
1. Bûche de Noël: The Holiday Cake
No holiday season celebration in France is complete without Bûche de Noël, a traditional Christmas dessert that comes in a variety of delectable flavors. From rich chocolates to fruity combinations, this yule log cake is a must-try. For a truly unforgettable experience, visit the legendary St. Germain bakery, Gerard Mulot or as it is now, Maison Mulot, which is my favorite go to spot! For me it’s only the passion fruit and raspberry Bûche de Noël, but the others are equally yummy. It’s not just delicious; it’s a feast for the eyes as well!
2. New Year’s Fireworks at the Arc de Triomphe
If you find yourself in Paris for New Year’s Eve, the fireworks display at the Arc de Triomphe is a spectacular sight to take in with several thousand of your soon to be closest friends. This grand celebration rivals any national holiday, filling the city with energy and excitement. As the fireworks light up the Parisian skyline, you’ll feel a sense of camaraderie among the thousands gathered to welcome the New Year. It’s a magical way to start your year in one of the world’s most beautiful cities. (And if you haven’t seen the 14 Juillet national holiday fireworks here this gives you a fabulous taste of that amazingness.)
3. Enchanting Christmas Markets in Alsace
A visit to Alsace during the holiday season will immerse you in some of France’s most charming towns. Strasbourg and Colmar are renowned for their enchanting Christmas markets, where you can soak up the holiday spirit. Sample delicious seasonal treats, sip mulled spiced wine, and shop locally produced goods (I got a honey salve that was sooooo good!) These towns are breathtakingly beautiful, embodying the magic of Christmas and old world charm. Just be prepared to enjoy plenty of festive food (and perhaps a beer in a mini boot)! Thankfully you will walk a lot.
4. Indulge in French Cheese Fondue
When it comes to warming up during the chilly winter nights, you can’t go wrong with cheese fondue. This alpine tradition can be found in the cities too, so get in the spirit! Treat yourself to a cozy meal of melting cheese and bread or potato fondue. Raclette is another delightful option to explore. Each year I seek out new spots that offer these delicious, warming dishes that are perfect for the season.
5. Stunning Christmas Markets Across France
Throughout Paris and beyond, town squares transform into delightful local Christmas markets complete with charming design because France. These festive markets are brimming with unique gifts, scrumptious foods, and, of course, mulled wine (I really dig the mulled wine as you walk moments.) Mu favorites are the charming markets near Metro Abbesses and along Boulevard Saint Germain, as well as in the park across from Notre Dame, Square René-Viviani. It’s called the Marché de Noël Notre Dame and here I enjoy the hot apple cider 🙂 Keep your eyes peeled for the beautiful holiday decorations that change each year, adding to the festive charm.
