Black Moon Lilith: The Basics of This Badass (Clutch!) Point in Your Astrology Chart

There are lots of important astrology points of course, but often the most important things don’t get much discussion. Kinda like life. (How is it we don’t talk about death and why we are here and understanding the magic around us without controlling it?) Black Moon Lilith was one such aspect but luckily, as with all things divine feminine, that is changing and it’s coming to light.

We currently have Black Moon Lilith in Libra, which means we are all under that energy in the Libra area of our chart. As Libra is all about relationships, it’s the perfect time (gotta love serendipity!) to get into her magic because, as we are clearly seeing problems in all sorts of our relationships (and justice and laws and love and money) and Lilith is about righting wrongs and not taking any ish, we want to use her wisely. She will blow some shit up though, so do read this piece I wrote to get an idea about how to best use it now. The world has been under her influence in :ibra for months now and we are heading into her most intense final degree. I mean you can see it everywhere, non?! Families torn apart, people waking up the truth of systems and people around them and not liking it. Necessary medicine but also, you better not be compromising yourself for others. She. Won’t. Allow.

“A person does not lightly elect to oppose his society. One would much rather be at home among one’s compatriots than be mocked and detested by them. And there is a level on which the mockery of the people, even their hatred, is moving, because it is so blind: It is terrible to watch people cling to their captivity and insist on their own destruction.” – James Baldwin via Toni Morrison in her eulogy of him

Lilith’s Origin Story (Thank Gosh She’s Getting her Rewrite)

Lilith’s reputation as shit starter and problem maker comes from her being Adam’s first wife who said hard pass to the offer of submitting to him and being the fall gal for all humanities ills. She heard what they wanted to go down for her and she was like, nah, miss me with all that blame, pain and horribleness. I’m out. She left right quick. So, naturally she was labeled a problem lol. They even sent angels to beg her to come back but she left them all on read. Adam and the dudes were mad mad so naturally her decision was labeled crazy and insane (quell shock.) They then said she became the angry, unhinged, violent seductress who causes all the problems in our world. Bros bro-ing from the jump.

However, as humans have evolved and we are in the dawning of the age of Aquarius, recently she got a rewrite, much like Medusa and Lorena Bobbitt. She now represents that rebellious part of ourself standing in our truth and out loud that will not be imprisoned. She is that part of us that hears bullshit and calls it out, going against the grain, instinctively, doing so happily on one’s own with zero fucks given. (It’s the happily on her own part and charting her own course that has dudes all bothered lol. You can see why she’s needed.) As a leader reflecting the dark aspects of our world (blindly following others, not standing up for what is decent, challenging the status quo, standing up for those mistreated, etc.) she is unapologetically strong in her truth and will happily go it alone.

Self-portrait of artist Artemisia Gentileschi, embodying the strength and defiance of Black Moon Lilith. In this powerful image, Gentileschi portrays herself as both a victim and a warrior, symbolizing her resilience after enduring personal trauma. The painting captures the raw emotion of a woman who, like Lilith, challenges societal expectations and takes control of her own narrative. Gentileschi’s expression and posture exude the unapologetic power of the untamed, primal feminine energy, making her a heroic figure in the fight against injustice and mistreatment.

As the first woman of humanity it’s no shock she was labeled a problem (cuz patriarchy) – she-demon, harlot, femme fatale, vampire, etc. – when she didn’t go along with the script. But again, as we as are integrating the shadow and expanding the divine feminine and masculine qualities and integrating them with each person, her nuances and strength and wisdom are shining through. Anger has a place, so too does walking away. (She famously wouldn’t return to Adam. A queen knows her value.)

Statue of Queen Hatshepsut, the powerful and female Pharaoh of ancient Egypt. Hatshepsut embodies the energy of Black Moon Lilith with her unapologetic rule and strength in a patriarchal society. They were mad mad at her lol. Despite efforts to erase her legacy by defacing and destroying her statues after her death to erase her memory she remains a symbol of female power, leadership, and resilience. Hatshepsut's reign challenges gender norms and stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of women who refuse to be silenced.

Lilith had such bad PR that Michelangelo made her a half-serpent (I mean she said no to that whole deal and yet was still made into one!) and, more recently, Dante Gabriel Rosetti made her a self-absorbed, sexy seductress, gaining power through her feminine wiles (yawn.) Thankfully her review means she is no longer the feared killer of babies (oof) or the seductress trickster (double ooof); she symbolizes a divine feminine strength standing for a greater belief and vision others may not be ready for. She is the “good trouble” inside us all that John Lewis spoke of acting on. Artemsia Gentilleschi’s art in action. We. Love. Her.

“You have to decide who you are and force the world to deal with you, not with its idea of you.” — James Baldwin (not sure why JB is the dude for this post but, that’s what Leo heart can do! And also I am finding it today on Toni Morrison’s birthday so it tracks lol.)

The Use Of Lilith

While this placement points to a power point, it is also informative of our shame. It can show us a place inside ourselves that we can doubt and feel bad about, so we can heal it. Her strength highlights where we can take back our power. Where we *have* incredible power. Through our experiences with others, we have pains, sometime so deep we don’t remember. However, they can be healed, too. She reminds us of our power.

Frida Kahlo. Lol they tried to call her Diego's wife in the paper. Bwaaaahahaha. Who? Black Moon Lilith in all the ways.

And, more importantly, we need her. Knowing where she is in our chart can be a huge aha moment because you see where your ferocious unyielding to others comes from, and learn how it can best be used. It is there for you. To work with. Maybe some call you too much. Pshaw! Turn. That. Ish. Up!

My readings touch on this, because like Chiron, Saturn and Pluto, it points to where sh*t can go down in our lives and throughout our lives.  Knowing what it is can help us navigate our relationships and challenges better, even realizing where to change our focus (i.e., it may not be your controlling parent, boss or partner to change, you may be better served focusing on healing that part of yourself that wants to hide or lacks self-esteem.)

Lilith is an unabashed power point for you. Your Black Moon Lilith is where the cosmos was like, hey babe, you’re gonna light the way for others here so you gotta go it alone but you know, you’ve never *alone* cuz we got you. It’s where you are naturally a rebel and will not conform, can’t conform, and in doing so show people another way is possible.

It’s your trailblazer point. It’s your instinct to stand up and often apart from the crowd. Your non-conformist gut that will not back down. She’s awesome!

Many talk about how she is our shadow, but she’s your shadow revealed, meaning its where you may find opposition from others but it’s instinctive. Lilith does not negotiate and neither will you. It’s where you are principled and strong and help others to do so (even if they may don’t like it lol.)

“That I work and think at the top of my form, that I stand on moral ground but know that ground must be shored up by mercy, that ”the world is before [ me ] and [ I ] need not take it or leave it as it was when [ I ] came in.” Toni Morrison on James Baldwin in his eulogy

The 411 on Black Moon Lilith

It’s not a star or planet, its rather a point in the sky when you were born. Black moon Lilith is called the lunar apogee, it’s the point in the moons elliptical orbit that’s farthest from earth. As it is farthest away – literally the dark side of the moon lol – it reveals our hidden, mysterious, rebellious, instinctive aspect. Knowing the time and place we were born allows us to know the sign and house, and so how it manifests in our life experience. IF you don’t know this you don’t need it. But if you do, learn from it and use it.

(There is an asteroid Lilith. That is not this.)

Mean Vs True (or Osculating) Black Moon Lilith

Because astrology has layers to it, of course there are two ways to read Black Moon Lilith, either the mean or the true (aka osculating).

Mean, if you remember your math, is another word for average. So, mean Black Moon Lilith is the average, or smoothed out position of the moon’s apogee.

True, or Osculating Lilith, is the moon’s actual position.

In my readings I use the True Black Moon Lilith, something I adopted as I learned more about the differences, including from Tom Jacobs wonderful work on YouTube. (His reading on mine was très spot on like wow, dude.)

As it can be a different sign and house from mean to average, it’s not a small difference. For myself, while I do understand the mean reading, I think the true BML is it. After all, we are all about true around here otherwise why bother, amiright? If you are getting a reading (not with me lol), ask the astrologer which they use and why as many use mean.

How to Find your Black Moon Lilith

I will say this calculator on Astrostyle is super helpful and simple. It gives you both your Mean Black Moon Lilith and your True Black Moon Lilith, (as well as two other points that may be useful if you’re super into astrology.) It’s nice to have it in one place and simply laid out, so you can see the difference between the mean and true.

You can also use astrology sites astro-seek.com and astro.com, etc., though those sites are more astrology knowledge intensive so just be advised.

Resources to Learn More About Black Moon Lilith

Of course, the best way to learn more about it for yourself is in an astrology reading, which you can get with me here.

To read up on it though, there’s Kelly Hunter, PhD, an Astro-Mythologist who focuses on the Cosmic Feminine so obvi we dig her. She deep dives into Black Moon Lilith and indeed all things Lilith (Black Moon is just one aspect) so is another wealth of information.

The site Elsa Elsa has useful information and analysis, as is the analysis on the site Born Under Saturn. Pam Gregory always mentions it in her reports and analysis so she is a good resource as well as Jacobs mentioned above.

If you have other sites you enjoy share below! Sharing is caring!

Now, go forth and challenge the eff out of the status quo and yourself with your Black Moon Lilith so we can make this world heaven on earth, mkay?!

And if you want to find out where your Black Moon Lilith is in your chart so you can start to make it work more for you, book a reading with me here.

“Lilith’s story starts in the Garden of Eden, when she refused to be lesser than Adam, they started a fight which resulted in Lilith leaving the garden. Soon after, God and Adam sent 3 angels in search of her to return. When they found her and delivered the message, Lilith refused and the angels threatened to drown her. They eventually came to an agreement that Lilith shall not harm any child or person bearing an amulet with the angel’s name on it.

Lilith started out from the lowliest of origins, she was a failure as Adam’s intended wife, then became the paramour of lascivious spirits, rose to be the bride of Samael the demon King, ruled as the Queen of Zemargad and Sheba, and then became a feminist icon.

Her dark origins lie in Babylonian demonology, where amulets and incantations were used to counter the powers of this winged spirit. Lilith has also appeared in the worlds of ancient Hittites, Egyptians, Israelites and Greeks. She makes a solitary appearance in the Bible, as a wilderness demon shunned by the prophet Isaiah, and in the Middle Ages she reappears in Jewish sources, as the dreadful and feared first wife of Adam.” Lilith, a Visual Re-Telling, Kayleigh Erwen
