Why Burgundy Wine Is So Special: A Taste of Exclusivity

Burgundy wines are considered among the best in the world, and for good reason. The region is one of the most exclusive wine-producing areas in France, with limited production and a focus on high-quality craftsmanship. Wine connoisseurs from all over the globe seek out these rare bottles, making Burgundy wines some of the most expensive and sought-after in the world. The limited production and strong demand create a unique market for Burgundy wine, making it a must-try for any wine lover.

Beaune, but make it a movie. Cobbled streets, caramel rooftops, and not a selfie stick in sight — just you, a baguette, and the kind of French charm that feels too magical to be real (but somehow is).

Explore Beaune: The Heart of Burgundy

Beaune is one of the most important cities in Burgundy, and it’s the perfect base for exploring the region’s famous wines. You might wonder, how major can Beaune be? Let me tell you – France really knows how to keep its gems hidden. This charming city is large enough to spend two or three leisurely days, strolling through museums, tasting wines, and savoring the unique atmosphere. It wasn’t on my list of favorite book shops in France, but there is one off the market square I keep thinking about so check them out (and maybe I need to update that list lol.)

When you walk on the outskirts of town, you see the fields and hills of vines. Against the blue sky with birds flying around, it’s a dream come true.

Here are the top things to do in Beaune:

  1. Taste Boeuf Bourguignon
One of the best experiences in Beaune is dining on boeuf bourguignon, the iconic Burgundy dish. I had mine at Biz’tro and it was beyond heavenly. The restaurant itself is modern and beautiful, with an adorable bar, a cozy dining room and a vaulted ceiling that adds to the ambiance. There was even an incredible ceiling treatment – is that a thing lol or did I make it up?! – slash art feature that stunned. Many locals sent me here and I’m so glad I followed them.
  2. Visit Hôtel-Dieu: A Historic Treasure
Hôtel-Dieu is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited in France. Founded in 1443, its stunning architecture and deep history make it a top attraction in Beaune. The museum inside provides fascinating insight into the region’s past, and you’ll want to leave time to wander through this historical gem. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop for unique souvenirs.
  3. Mustard Tasting: A Flavorful Experience
Did you know that Burgundy is a mustard hub? Dijon is nearby, a few stops away via train, but you can taste delciousness here in town (one of my fav brands). The region’s mustard brands are legendary, and a tasting experience is a must when here. Forget Grey Poupon, and try some of the local varieties. Edmond Fallot is a French household staple (so, so good) and the headquarters are here in town. I went for a tasting and just wow. The sheer range of flavors – from mild to spicy – will surprise you. I bought a few jars to take home, and they’ve become family favorites!
  4. Shop for Antiques in Beaune
Beaune’s antique shops are a treasure trove for collectors. Though small, these shops are filled with beautiful items like vintage books, artwork, furniture, and tableware. I found some stunning pieces that I regret not purchasing – so take your time and explore these hidden gems! Not everything is online so keep your eyes open.
  5. Wine Tasting in Beaune: Sip and Savor
Wine tasting is, of course, a highlight of any trip to Beaune. Whether you’re visiting world-famous wineries like Château de Pommard or exploring smaller, lesser-known vineyards, Burgundy offers some of the best wine-tasting experiences in the world. Be sure to pace yourself – the French can enjoy wine all day without skipping a beat, but I definitely needed a nap afterward, lol! Beaune is easily accessible from Paris by train, and the city is walkable from the station. If you’re planning to visit vineyards outside the city, taxis or Ubers are available.
