Why I got a ticket, paid, waited in line, and dragged several friends (who ended up loving it). You must visit if you’re in Porto, Portugal – and you really should find yourself there.

Let me tell you—Porto’s bookstore is hands down the most gorgeous, historical, and awe-inspiring one I’ve ever visited. Sure, I adore a well-worn, cramped used bookstore where chaos reigns, and every corner holds a magical find that feels like fate when you pick it up and your heart leaps (shoutout to Abbey Bookshop!). Or those charming spots brimming with whimsy and variety, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a secret universe (RIP Upstart Crow in San Diego, please come back!) And I’ll always cherish the cozy local bookstore where you can wander without pressure, just waiting for the right book to greet you (my hometown Brookline Booksmith, you’re a dream!)
But Porto? Porto’s bookstore is the shop of all shops. Gorgeous, relaxing, inspiring, and a bit imposing (but in a good way)—it’s straight-up magical. I’m talking Hogwarts-level vibes here, folks.

If you’re unfamiliar, this bookstore has gained serious Instagram fame (ugh, I know, but it’s deserved). To manage the crowds, you’ll need to buy a ticket to enter. The good news? Your ticket can go toward a book purchase—like the Alice in Wonderland classic I picked up (felt fitting, given the surreal experience). Or, you can treat it as a donation to the place that’s giving you an unforgettable experience. But let’s be real, get a book. You know you want to.

Inside, you’ll find two floors with a staircase that looks straight out of a Renaissance painting. The wood paneling, the light, the vibe—it’s sexy. Dark wood, red carpet—this place is seductive, you guys. Honestly, who knew Portugal had such a hot bookstore? (Did I just start a hot bookstore trend? Cuz it should exist. You’re welcome.)
Even though the line outside might be long (it’s worth it), the interior is spacious, so it’s never crowded (looking at you, Shakespeare and Co. Paris—take notes). You’ll have the time and space to actually browse and appreciate the beauty of the place. The selection isn’t huge—respecting the historic gorgeous structure means you won’t find stacks and stacks of books—but it’s a refined experience. It feels like what bookstores were in a time when printed pages were as precious as gold. So fun!

I timed our visit so the wait was only 15 minutes (the travel Gods did smile on us). My pro-tip: go when it opens, near closing, or around lunch.
While you’re waiting, or on the way, maybe pop into a nearby church or grab a pastel de nata from a nearby café? Seriously, always get one. We waited only a few minutes, but if you plan your visit for an off-peak time—like right when they open or close—you should be fine.
After you’ve picked your book, head out to the Duoro River, find a bit of space on the grass, and enjoy the view. Porto is one of the most beautiful cities to relax and read in, too. Oh, and save that Port for later. 😉

Astrology Moment: Porto’s Sun/Moon signs
Porto’s astrology is said to be Cancer Sun/Moon with Libra rising, but here’s the thing: I’m not fully sold on this. I need more info before I can truly sign off on that. It could track, but I’m holding my cosmic judgment until I dive deeper.
