Looking for a weekend getaway from Paris or London? Antwerp (or Antwerpen in Dutch, Anvers in French) is a hidden gem that’s brimming with charm, culture, and a relaxed, easygoing vibe. Trust me, you’re going to love it! It blew me away in so many ways (you must hit that flea market!)
I swear, the Antwerp Tourist Board should hire me for all the good things I say about this city. Another recent conversation with someone who had just been to Brussels had me singing Antwerp’s praises and side-eyeing them for not coming to me first for advice. (Seriously, why don’t we all just call places by the name the locals use? Antwerp sounds way cooler than “Antwerp” anyway. It’s fun to say!) There’s also Lille nearby, which is charming and a big bougie too, plus it is on my book lovers tour of France articles, but if you want Belgium and more of a capital feel, this old historic town with treasures is so it.
Forget Brussels. I promise you, no one has ever said, “OMG, Brussels is a must-visit, I had the best time.” It just doesn’t happen. Brussels is… well, kinda bland? It has that one square, but it’s not exactly charming. The whole city has this bureaucratic, European Union vibe. If Flemish art were a city, it would be Brussels. Sorry, Brussels, I tried, I really did. You make a mean waffle, but a tiny statue of a peeing boy (Manneken Pis) isn’t enough to make up for it—especially with all the weird and tragic backstories attached to it!
Now, Antwerp? That’s where it’s at. Who knew? It’s got amazing museums, charming streets, fantastic food, and a lovely scene. It felt a bit like Boston to me (my hometown so high praise)—walkable, with everything right there. And it’s on the water, too! The history dates back over a thousand years, and did I mention how cute it is?
I’m not even into diamonds (though feel free to gift me one, haha), but they’ve got a whole diamond district and a museum dedicated to it. Seriously, Antwerp is a thriving, vibrant city that’s perfect for a weekend escape. And what’s best, as it’s under-the-radar, you have the charm and locals mostly to yourself. (And good luck finding even an afternoon of fun in Brussels. I dare you!)
Must-See Spots in Antwerp:
- Plantin-Moretus Museum
This place is a flipping gem! It’s the world’s only museum that’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site. As a writer and history buff, of course I loved it and dorked out hard—but trust me, it’s not just for nerds like me. The museum is housed with the beautiful family mansion dating back to 1555, and is the oldest printing press still in use. It’s charming, interesting, and small enough that you won’t get bored. Bonus: The house has so many Rubens paintings that you can skip the Rubens Museum (which, by the way, was under renovation when I visited, but no complaints from me—Rubens is not really my vibe!) - Red Star Line Museum
This is one of my top 3 museums in Europe. It’s an emotional journey through the history of immigration in Antwerp which is so vast I had no idea. Like it’s the NYC Ellis Island of Europe lol. You’ll leave this museum with a completely different perspective of what people have gone through for centuries. It’s moving, powerful, and truly unforgettable. Leave more time than you think because it really is a meditative place. You move at a slow pace taking in the experiences and lives of others in a very intimate way. - Wander the Streets of Antwerp
The city is full of beautiful architecture, charming antique and vintage shops (seriously, some of the best in Europe), and delightful cafes and restaurants to explore. It’s one of those cities that just invites you to wander and get lost. We are always suggesting this but here is a place that you will benefit greatly. Find yourself wandering these old streets with centuries of stories… - Belgian Waffles
You have to have at least one waffle a day while you’re there lol. I made a rule that I could only have one, but let’s be real—I broke it several times. I’d do it again in a heartbeat! - Heritage Weekend
If you can time your trip with Heritage Weekend, even better. It’s when the city’s historic sites are open for free (not that they are expensive but still), and there’s a big race happening, so the sites are quieter than usual. It’s fun to see the race, plus you get to enjoy the sights without the crowds! Plus you get to be part of their cultural weekend which is lovely. - Port Authority Building
Don’t let the title fool you lol. There’s this stunning building called the Port Authority Building, shaped like a ship, perched on a pedestal, and shining like a diamond (because, you know, Antwerp and diamonds). It’s a must-see for its architecture alone. Such a wow.
