However, there are a few tips and things to know to ensure your holiday experience goes smoothly—especially this year with the shadow of Mercury retrograde in effect. France is known for spontaneous strikes, but it also takes its holiday traditions seriously.

Tip: Most shops and sites like museums will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day, but you’ll have no trouble accessing everything else during the rest of the holiday season. Be sure to book tickets for popular museums or events – Disneyland for example – in advance to secure your spot.

No Christmas in Paris is complete without trying a Buche de Noël—the traditional French Yule log cake. This delightful dessert comes in a variety of flavors, from rich chocolate to tangy fruit fillings like raspberry or passion fruit (my fav!) Head to any local bakery throughout December to pick up this seasonal treat, and why not try it more than once? The more you taste, the more you’ll discover your favorite variation. One of my personal favorites is the raspberry-passion fruit version from Mulot Bakery in Saint-Germain-des-Près, but I’ve never had a bad one lol.
You can purchase a Buche de Noël for a large group, say for your own réveillon, but if you’re traveling solo or with just a few people, many bakeries offer individual slices. It’s the perfect indulgence as you explore Paris! And you can have it any day, not just at Christmas.
3. Visit the Galleries Lafayette Christmas Tree
A must-see holiday attraction is the Christmas tree at Galleries Lafayette. Sounds cheesy, it’s so not lol. Each year, this iconic Parisian department store features a beautifully decorated tree with a different theme. The building itself is worth a visit—the space is many stories high with a stunning interior glass dome that offers spectacular views from each floor. Be sure to head up to the mezzanine for a closer look and great photo opportunities, including a bridge that offers an even better vantage point.
Tip: Arrive early to avoid the crowds and long lines. Like, when it opens lol.
4. Stroll Through Paris’s Christmas Markets
Paris comes alive with charming Christmas markets during the holiday season. One of the most famous and largest markets is at Tuileries Garden, where you can shop for artisanal gifts, warm up with vin chaud (mulled wine), and indulge in delicious holiday treats – of the sweet and savory kind. It’s prime fondue and raclette season, too. Other markets to check out include the Marché de Noël at Notre-Dame, the one near the Abbesses Metro station, and the by Metro Saint-Germain-des-Prés on the boulevard. There are about 20 around Paris so definitely check out others, as each one has local charm and details.
These markets are open until after New Year’s, giving you plenty of time to explore. Whether you’re sipping hot chocolate, enjoying a glass of champagne, or picking up some gourmet French treats, there’s something for everyone at these festive markets.
5. Enjoy a Christmas Concert in One of Paris’s Historic Churches
For a truly magical Christmas experience, attend a holiday concert in one of Paris’s historic churches. From Église Saint-Germain-des-Prés to Sainte-Chapelle and Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre, Paris is filled with stunning churches where local musicians often perform during the holiday season. Whether it’s an opera singer, a choir, or a string quartet, the acoustics in these centuries-old churches are simply breathtaking. But do bundle up!
Tip: Look for concert listings online or check for signs outside churches during your visit. The atmosphere, especially on a cold winter’s night, makes for a memorable Christmas tradition in the making.
Bonus: Explore Place Vendôme’s Stunning Holiday Lights
For another beautiful Parisian Christmas experience, take a stroll through Place Vendôme at night.
