Phoenix Travel Guide as It’s Not Just for Republicans + Grandmas Anymore: Beyond the Top 10 — Food, Culture, and Hidden Gems

Phoenix Is Rising (and Not Just in Temperature)

There is a reason people keep moving here, despite the dry heat and political baggage (ooof). It is growing into a city with heart, diverse culture, and a genuine sense of place. See an indie band downtown, have delicious Mexican food, and check out some architectural gems before you hike into landscapes that will leave you in awe. This town deserves a review and new PR as it’s a treasure — let us keep it that way.

Oh, and one last thing? Skip Bianco’s. You heard me. The best pizza is actually another spot. (See below.)

Phoenix Basics and Current Vibe

Phoenix now has the fifth-largest population in the United States, yet for too long it has been unfairly pigeonholed as nothing more than a haven for retirees and die-hard conservatives. The truth? The Valley of the Sun is layered, diverse, and brimming with unexpected beauty and culture — even in the triple-digit heat. (And there are even great day trips you can find here.)

From architecture that feels plucked from a 1950s postcard to desert blooms that will stop you in your tracks, this city is a treasure worth savoring. And yes, the heat is real — but so are the sunsets and storms that will make you forget all about it. In less than an hour you can visit an old cowboy town, or explore rock formations that feel like another planet.

You can shop at a still-running family farm (yes, the farm is still here!) and sit outside at picnic tables surrounded by hay. There are charming independent stores — not chains — and museums and art spaces everywhere. It is country and culture, and I hope Phoenix keeps its old farms and agricultural history as it makes way for the new.

Phoenix Travel Guide: Beyond the Top 10

Yes, it is hot. But yes, there are misters — and yes, they are life. Once you get past the sweat, Phoenix (and neighbor Scottsdale) are brimming with legit deliciousness, secret history, and style that is soulful and surprising.

Arizona may be known for its politics and snowbirds, but this desert city and nearby towns like Goodyear are growing for a reason. It is not just cacti and golf anymore — it is cocktails, community, and cultural moments that actually matter.

Here’s my Diamond Desert Edit: more than 10 places that prove Phoenix isn’t just rising — it is shining.

Leah’s Diamond Desert Picks

1. Pinos
It is the best pizza in America. I DO NOT MAKE THE RULES. A perfect neighborhood spot to grab a wood-fired pizza, people-watch, and laugh about that one time you thought it was just another wine bar. Pro tip: the Spaghetti alla Capri and the white pie are my forever order. Say hi to Pino. Oh — and if you skip the cannoli, you are a noodle. I always get two.

Pino’s Pizza in Phoenix delivers the ultimate pizza experience — widely hailed by those of us who’ve tried it as the best pie in America. Also shown: the ridiculously delicious Spagetti alla Capri.

2. Moxie Coffee Co.
Stylish, smart, and filled with good energy — just how coffee should feel. It could be in L.A., Miami, or New York, but it is very Arizona. Bonus points for the vinyl selection and elevated vibe. (Every time I go they don’t have the hats, but this place is one where Je dig le swag lol.)

3. Cartel Coffee Lab
A true Arizona original serving a delicious cup in a chill vibe. Great if you like your caffeine with a side of indie cred and desert chic. My pick: the Old Town Scottsdale location, with outdoor seating and a tucked-away back area if you want quiet.

4. Durant’s
You walk in through the kitchen. You stay for the martinis, the history, and those gorgeous red leather booths. Frank and Dino could saunter in, no questions asked. It is old-school glamour and steakhouse deliciousness in Downtown Phoenix. The brightly colored exterior is its own retro treasure.

5. Desert Botanical Garden
An actual gem — one of my favorite outdoor spaces in America. You may think you know the desert until you walk through this place. If you have time, hike the surrounding Papago Park trails. The rock formations will rearrange your soul. Astonishing to have this inside a major city. Is this some Star Trek planet? Nope, just the AZ.

6. El Chorro
Classic Arizona elegance with Camelback views. The sticky buns are famous, but the real indulgence is soaking in the vibe — especially at golden hour. A throwback in the best way.

7. Beckett’s Table
Thoughtful, local, and just plain delicious. If you want to treat yourself without the fuss, this Arcadia spot is it. Cozy but elevated.

8. Geordie’s at Wrigley Mansion
Charming and historic with panoramic city views. We go for Easter brunch, but it is stunning any time. A “step into another world” experience — and the food holds up.

9. The Biltmore Hotel
One of my favorite hotels in America. You cannot come to Phoenix without experiencing Frank Lloyd Wright’s influence. Why do we not build like this anymore? Grand without being gaudy, it is also Americana history: White Christmas was written here. Come for brunch, a cocktail, or just to remember what architecture used to feel like.

10. Arizona’s Cool Old-School Architecture
Honestly, just look around. Like the old Chevrolet dealership downtown that looks straight out of the 1950s. They do not make them like this anymore — and that is the magic. Arizona has retro gems everywhere. Let’s protect them before we expand, shall we?! 💎

Honorable Mentions (Because You’re Gonna Ask)

  • First Fridays – Downtown Phoenix Arts Crawl
Indie galleries, street performances, and creative energy in the desert heat.
  • Valley Bar – A Basement Surprise
Hidden under a government building, this speakeasy-style venue brings great acts and better cocktails.
  • Changing Hands Bookstore
Part bookstore, part bar, full-on cultural heartbeat of the Valley.
  • Daily Dose – Old Town Scottsdale
Bright, buzzing, and serving the best corned beef hash.
  • Carry On Bar
Retro airline chic meets clever cocktails in a cozy downtown space.

Hot Sun, Cool Soul — That’s the Real Phoenix

Sure, the summer heat is intense. (While the dry heat thing is real, thank the desert gods for patio misters.) But beyond the extreme temperatures, Phoenix has a pulse — rich in flavor, story, and space to breathe. This city is not trying to be L.A., Miami, or New York, and thank god for that. It is dusty, wild, funny, and fierce in its own way — a place where you can see stars at night and a shaman before brunch.

Phoenix is not just growing. It is evolving. A little wild, a little weird, and absolutely worth the trip.

Now go book your ticket — and wear linen.
