A Charlie Who Deserves Way More Attention Right Now
Happy Birthday, Chef!
A good documentary, like a good book or a good conversation, changes you. It is more than entertainment — it informs, inspires, and challenges all at once. Netflix’s Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter is one of those.

On the surface, it tells the story of how one Midwestern college party guy turned himself into a culinary legend. How Chicago’s Charlie Trotter forced the world’s snobbiest haute cuisine critics to take American chefs seriously — and, in doing so, changed the restaurant industry forever.
He never went to culinary school. He was self taught. He got two Michelin stars at his eponymous Chicago restaurant, and one star at a second Las Vegas restaurant.
That alone would make for a great doc. But the real story is the man himself: his relentless Virgo drive for excellence, his caring vision, and his tragic inability to care for himself. He made giving back and philanthropy part of his work.
It left me asking: how could someone who gave so much, and elevated American cuisine to Michelin-starred heights, leave us so broken at just 54?
Obvi I looked to his chart…
Chef Charlie Trotter Was Peak Virgo Energy
Of course I had to check his chart. Virgo Sun? Yes. And not just that — Mercury, Venus, and Pluto in Virgo too. That’s a full-on Virgo stellium, folks. (On the other end is Blake Lively, read about her here.)
No wonder his kitchen ran like a modern temple. No wonder he demanded perfection down to the finest detail. No wonder he raised standards for an entire country.
And yet… no wonder it came at a cost. Virgo perfectionism is a double-edged sword.

Virgo and the Pursuit of Perfection
The documentary lays it bare: perfectionism is a losing game.
Yes, you can create brilliance. Yes, you can hold Michelin stars for years. But perfection never stays. The croissant flakes, the sunrise fades, the golf ball’s perfect arc falls back to Earth.
And in the void that follows? That’s where life happens.
Virgo energy struggles here — because Virgo wants to get it right. They have to get it right, knows it can get it right, must get it right. Charlie Trotter got “it” right for 20 years. Day after day after day. But ignoring his physical, mental, and emotional health? That was the part he could not control.
Classic Virgo cautionary tale. You can miss the forest for the trees.
Virgo as Healer
Here’s the thing: Virgos are healers. Charlie healed America’s culinary reputation. He elevated our food culture from tacky to world-class. He cared for his staff like family, trained them to excellence, and gave diners experiences that nourished body and soul.
Food is medicine, and his kitchen was a clinic for the senses.
But Virgos often forget: even healers need healing. Charlie rarely asked for help. He carried it all himself. And in the end, that weight was too much.
Virgos, take note. You can be the best — and still need support.
(Obviously he rose in the 80s, a diff era, both for consciousness and what was deemed success. However, whenever we look back that is a case, and we appreciate that. There is no shaming of him or what he did, only the desire to learn from others around here. He did his best, as did everyone around him. The point here is to learn, both how to pay attention to when we need help, but also when to watch and help others that may need it.)
Cleanliness, Standards, and the Virgo Legacy
His restaurant was sleek, modern, almost clinical — and everyone knew their role mattered. That’s Virgo. Precision, cleanliness, order.
But here’s why this matters now: America is rethinking who we honor, who we learn from, and who shaped our culture. Charlie Trotter deserves his place in that story.
If you love food, watch this doc. If you own a business, watch this doc. If you’re a Virgo — or just love one — watch this doc. But also, if you strive for success or excellence in any way, watch this doc.
Because Charlie Trotter is a Virgo archetype worth studying. Inspiring, heartbreaking, brilliant, cautionary.
Virgo Lessons from Charlie Trotter
I’m so glad I watched Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter. It reminded me to pursue excellence — but never at the expense of health and joy.
Virgos, perfection will never be permanent. But love, healing, laughter, and care? That’s the real legacy.
Also, his famed Chicago restaurant has reopened, run by his son Dylan, and features a Guest Chef Dinner Series. Check it out. (I know I want to!)
Charlie Trotter showed us both sides of Virgo power. Let’s learn from him.
As the South Node moves through Virgo until July 2026, this part of us — the perfectionism, the self-criticism, the tendency to carry it all alone — is asking to be healed. Charlie Trotter’s story is a reminder that even brilliance needs balance (and also we should talk about this legend more!) If this resonates with you, I invite you to explore your own chart with me. Together we can look at where Virgo shows up for you, what needs releasing, and how to step into a more joyful, supported path. Book a reading here.
